How To Install An LED Downlight
If you have a home with incandescent recessed lighting, you may consider using LED downlights. As with other LED lights, you get the benefit of reduced energy usage as well as a longer lifespan compared to other lighting technologies. Installing a screw-in LED downlight is a simple upgrade you can do on your own and doesn't take very long. When buying an LED downlight, there are a few things to consider:
- Size of the can lights - Downlights are available as replacements for can lights with an opening of four to six inches.
- Wattage - While 65W equivalent LED downlights are the most popular, you may choose an option with a higher or lower wattage based on how bright you want the light to be.
- Color temperature - Your choice will depend on how warm (yellow) or cool (blue) you want the lighting to be. Options are available from 2700K, which most closely reflects the color temperature of soft white incandescent lighting, all the way up to 5000K, which many refer to as daylight white.
