New 100W Replacement LED from GE

New 100W Replacement LED from GE

When 100W incandescent bulbs were banned nearly two years ago due to rising efficiency standards, many replacement LEDs rose to the task of providing the same level of brightness while using less power. But as we all know, not all LED bulbs are created equal. According to a recent review by CNET, GE’s new 100W Equal LED is one of the best of these replacements.

The bulb's most impressive spec is its energy (and therefore, cost) efficiency. Because of its low power draw, the GE bulb would add less than $2 to your energy bill each year, assuming you’re paying the average of 11 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) and are running it for an average of 3 hours a day. Under the same conditions, a 100W incandescent bulb would cost upwards of $12 per year, assuming it lasted that long as incandescents typically only last 1,000 hours. In contrast, the Energy Star certified GE 100W Equal LED is rated to last 25,000 hours, or well over 20 years—an impressive 10 of which are covered under warranty.

While the review mainly sang praises, it also expressed a few concerns. One of them revealed doubts that the bulb would be able to produce omnidirectional light because of the large fins protruding from its sides. After testing, this concern was null and void—the fins did not result in dim spots. Another concern was the bulb’s color temperature. Under the scrutiny of CNET’s spectrometer, the GE bulb’s color temperature turned out to be closer to 2600K than the 2700K it advertises. However, they did note this wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, particularly if you prefer warmer tones in your home.

1000Bulbs.com does not currently carry this GE model. However, this review definitely has us thinking about our own healthy selection of 100W Equal LED bulbs
